Field strengthens for Merida Bikes Ruapehu Cycle Classic 200830 January 2008Just 8 days to go until the 2nd Merida Bikes Ruapehu Cycle Classic and entries are still streaming in. On Saturday February 9th both recreational and elite cyclists will tackle the 160km lap around Mount Ruapehu, taking in the Desert Road and climbing to an altitude of over 1,000 metres above sea level. Early bird entries are still on offer until midnight on January 31st, and the team category (where riders each ride a 40km leg as part of a relay) is proving very popular, while at the front of the field Auckland’s Gordon McCauley and Aaron Strong are expected to push the pace, with the course record likely to be under threat.
