2 days to go!

8 February 2007

Just two days until we kick off the Ruapehu Cycle Classic, and what will hopefully become a truly classic fun ride in NZ...

Hi Everyone

We have over 200 competitors this weekend which will make for a safe and manageable race. Here's the low down...

1. The Weather - best thing about the weather forecast is the reference to 'light winds'. The mountain forecast for Friday is for fine periods with light winds and for Saturday is for some showers with a light southerly building throughout the day. Best part about that will be the tail wind down the Desert Road!

2. The start is now in the carpark outside the Ohakune Club - not on Conway St as previously advised. Our event manager Troy Campbell will be on Conway St if anyone goes there in error (only 150 mtrs away!), but the Ohakune Club is where it's at.

3. Lahar Risk - many of you will have seen the media about the risk of the Crater Lake on Mount Ruapehu bursting and a lahar (mudslide) coming down the mountain. The risk of this increases through the day (according to our safety person) as the snow melt peaks. When the Crater Lake does go (and we hope it won't be Saturday) experts have identified that it will pass under (or over) the State Highway at Tangiwai.

As a result the road and bridge have been raised by Transit NZ and an advanced warning system is in place to close the road. Also a bonus for us, is that the Ruapehu Cycle Classic passes through there after just 15km, so it's (a) early in the day, and (b) the field will be close together and easy to control. More on this at briefing.

4. Teams - your hand-over will be to tag in the transition zone. A slap on the hand, back or further south will be fine. Team changeovers are also where the drink stations are positioned.

Changeover 1 : Tukino Skifield Rd (40km approx)
Changeover 2 : Roadside 6km after turn in SH46 (80km approx)
Changeover 3 : National Park (120km approx)

When finishing your leg, please have your number clearly visible as we have timing people taking times for each cyclist. Every team member will be given their own number.

5. Everyone starts together!

6. Drink Stations are self help. There will be PRO4 Energy & Electrolyte drink and water at each station.

7. The Ohakune Club will be offering cheap meals(and beer) on Friday night and Saturday afternoon before the prize giving.

8. As advised, the roads are open, and it is a privilege for us (you) to be able to ride in an organised event down the Desert Road SH1. Please keep to the left at all times and obey road rules. Anyone crossing the centre line will be disqualified.

It's going to be a great ride and an epic challenge, so arm yourself with the right attitude to get around and have a great time doing it!

See you in Ohakune.

Best regards
Matt & the Team
