Entries are open for the Ruapehu Cycle Classic 14 December 2006 Online entries have only been open for two weeks and the Ruapehu Cycle Classic entries have already passed the 100 mark.... The 160km lap of the Tongariro National Park was one of the great stage races in the North Island. Many of the senior road cycling fraternity happily regail memories of a May event - often in sleet and snow - with a field of 50 or 60 racing the event. The February 10th event in 2007 will be a somewhat of a different affair. In the middle of summer, the temparature on the course could easily touch 30 degrees, and the 58km section along the Desert Road will undoubtedly be a highlight for many. Starting and finishing in Ohakune, the event gets under way early to ensure a minimum amount of traffic is using SH1 with the last cyclist expected to make the left hand turn towards Rangipo and National Park by 10:30am. The relay category is split into four roughly equal legs, but some team riders will have more climb and others more downhill. Saturday night promises to be a great evening 'on the town' in Ohakune, and we hope to establish this annual event as a must-do on the Endurance Sport Calendar.
